What is German Embassy certification?
For German corporate documents to be used in mainland China, it is first necessary to confirm the type of document and the requirements of the receiving entity in China. For public documents falling within the scope of the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, notarization plus an Apostille issued by the country of origin is sufficient for use in mainland China, without the need to obtain consular legalization from a Chinese consulate in Germany. Only for documents that do not fall under the Convention or where the receiving entity explicitly requires consular legalization is the full chain required: notarization + authentication by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs + consular legalization by a Chinese embassy or consulate in Germany.
Many foreign trade enterprises easily choose the wrong authentication path, leading to business delays and rework. Sending German documents for use in mainland China involves two paths: ① Public documents covered by the Convention: notarization + Apostille issued by the country of origin; ② Circumstances where the receiving entity explicitly requires consular legalization: German notarization + authentication by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs + consular legalization by the Chinese embassy in Germany. Before proceeding, it is essential to verify the requirements of the receiving institution.
Simply put, it is the authenticity verification of various commercial and civil documents issued in Germany, proving that the documents are true, legal, and valid, so that they can be accepted by official institutions, banks, and partners in mainland China and related cross-border scenarios.
