What Is German VAT?
German VAT, fully known as “Value Added Tax,” is an important component of the EU VAT system, administered by the German Federal Ministry of Finance and local tax authorities. The standard VAT rate in Germany is typically 19%, with a reduced rate of 7% applicable to certain goods and services.
Enterprises engaged in taxable business activities, selling goods, providing services, or importing goods in Germany are required to register for German VAT once certain conditions are met, and must collect VAT on transactions, issue compliant invoices, and file tax returns. For cross-border e-commerce enterprises, especially those using local German warehouses or selling goods to German consumers, VAT compliance is critically important.
Simply put, German VAT is not an ordinary business license, but rather the VAT tax registration and transaction identity marker for enterprises operating in Germany: without VAT registration, enterprises cannot legally collect taxes, nor can they issue tax invoices recognized by German clients and tax authorities.
