What Is Japan JCT?
Japan JCT, fully known as “Japanese Consumption Tax,” is Japan's consumption tax, a VAT-type tax levied by Japan on goods and services. The JCT registration number is the consumption tax identification number obtained by an enterprise after tax registration in Japan, issued by the Japanese tax office.
Enterprises engaged in taxable sales, import of goods, or provision of services in Japan are required to register for JCT once certain conditions are met, and must collect consumption tax, issue compliant invoices, and file tax returns in transactions. For cross-border e-commerce enterprises, especially those using local Japanese warehouses or selling goods to Japanese consumers, JCT compliance is becoming increasingly important.
Simply put, JCT is not an ordinary business license, but rather the **consumption tax registration and transaction identity identifier** for enterprises operating in Japan: without JCT registration, an enterprise cannot legally collect consumption tax, nor can it issue tax invoices recognized by Japanese clients.
