What Is UK VAT?
UK VAT, fully known as “Value Added Tax,” is a value-added tax levied by the UK on most goods and services, administered by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). The standard UK VAT rate is typically 20%, with reduced rates of 5% or 0% applying to certain goods and services.
Businesses engaged in taxable activities, selling goods, providing services, or importing goods in the UK must register for UK VAT once certain conditions are met, and are required to collect VAT on transactions, issue compliant invoices, and file tax returns. For cross-border e-commerce businesses, especially those using UK local warehouses or selling goods to UK consumers, VAT compliance is critically important.
Simply put, UK VAT is not an ordinary business license, but rather a VAT tax registration and transaction identity identifier for businesses operating in the UK: without VAT registration, a business cannot legally collect tax, nor can it issue tax invoices recognized by UK customers and tax authorities.
